Mustang is a mirror of Sooner State history. A review of the passing century reveals a responsive government, prosperous farms and ranches dotting the landscape, and the capacity to thrive in an often fickle economy. Located in central Oklahoma, the community grows today at a boom-town pace. In 2001 Mustang celebrated a milestone, its Centennial birthday. The Mustang post office was established in 1895, but the town was not formally established until Charles G. Jones, former mayor of Oklahoma City, filed the plat in November, 1901. During that same year, the Oklahoma City and Western Railroad, (Frisco), built a line from Oklahoma City to Chickasha that passed through Mustang. Mustang's economy was based on agriculture until the middle of the 20th Century. Major crops included wheat, oats, corn, cotton, sweet potatoes, watermelons, and cantaloupes. Until the 1920s peach and other fruit orchards were the primary crops for local farmers. Truck farming remained prevalent into the 1940s, when the dairy and beef industry gained supremacy. In the 1960s, the town began evolving into a bedroom community for Oklahoma City. The 4th of July celebrations are some of the most notable (and noisy), in the state - despite most community's hatred for fireworks.
Mustang Public Schools is the school district, which covers the City of Mustang, some areas in Eastern Oklahoma City, along with portions of Yukon, bordering around the I-40 area. The City of Mustang also holds it's annual "Mustang Western Days". Western Days is held each year on the first full weekend following Labor Day. Crowd size has been estimated as high as 30,000 due to the many events and attractions bringing in visitors! Many reunions are also planned around this weekend, given the Western Days tends to bring many families back to Mustang, particularly for this event. Seeing the streets lined with lawn chairs and pickup beds full of laughing children anticipating a parade, reconnecting with friends, and shopping the arts and crafts booths are just a few of the event's long reaching and traditional benefits. Accompanied by the local entertainment, the weekend is packed with opportunities for fond and new memories for all!
